How Porcelain Tile and Ceramic Tile is Made
Ceramic tile is made from natural clay, sand and water. All of the materials are combined together and then molded to form square or rectangular tiles. The tiles are then baked in a kiln to remove most of the moisture. Ceramic tiles are baked (or fired) in a kiln at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The baking, or firing, of the ceramic tile removes the moisture.
Porcelain tile is made from denser clay and feldspar, unlike ceramic. Feldspar is made of rock-forming minerals that add to the hardness and durability of porcelain tile. Porcelain tile is also fired at higher temperatures for longer periods of time in order to remove all moisture.
Both forms of tile can be rectified so that you’re getting tiles in uniformed dimensions. However, you’ll find the porcelain tile is most commonly rectified.
Uses for Porcelain Tile and Ceramic Tile
Porcelain tile and ceramic tile can be used for a variety of things such as wall coverings, floor coverings, ceilings, countertops, showers, and backsplashes. Porcelain tile can be used indoors and outdoors, while ceramic is intended for indoor use only. The reason this is the case I due to porcelain tile’s durability and hardness.
Tile Durability
With durability, porcelain is going to be the more durable choice simply due to its composition. Ceramic is best for residential applications, while porcelain can be used in residential and light or medium commercial spaces. When you shop for tile, ask about the tile’s PEI rating. PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating is a scale from 0-5, which classifies how much wear tile can bear without damaging the surface.
